  • Attorney General's Pro Bono Heroes
    Tue, 11/24/2009 - 18:11

The Attorney General welcomed a number of the unsung heroes of pro bono recently, including 5 FRU volunteers, in the House of Lords.

As last year, the Attorney General held a reception in the Cholmondeley Room of the House of Lords in November 2009 to recognise and thank individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to pro bono work. Among those individuals, whom she described as heroes, were five FRU volunteers,

    • Tim Buley of Landmark Chambers
    • Dingare Shipra
    • Barnaby Large
    • Jennifer Terry and
    • Benedict Wray.

We congratulate them all. At the same time, we thank Lady Scotland, the Attorney General, and of course a FRU alumna herself, for taking this initiative.

  • Flora London Marathon 2009
    Thu, 03/19/2009 - 12:21

We are pleased to announce we have a FRU team entered in the Flora London Marathon this year. The team consists of Rachael Goodall, Rad Kohanzad, Barney Large, Alison Picton and Michael Reed.

Unlike running 26.2 miles, sponsoring the team through Justgiving is quick and easy. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor; FRU will receive your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor the FRU team now!

  • Awards of Costs in Pro Bono Cases
    Thu, 03/19/2009 - 12:19

The Legal Services Act has paved the way for awards of costs to be made in cases won by litigants who are supported by lawyers acting pro bono. The funds will be paid to a new charity, the Access to Justice Foundation. The rules will take effect in late 2008. Costs will only be awarded under these rules if they would have been awarded had the lawyer been paid.

FRU’s opinion is included in the attached article in the Law Society’s Gazette.
